Electrical energy technology

Project Description

Research into condition monitoring methods for electrical energy meters. Electrical energy meters should no longer simply be replaced at fixed intervals, but only when they no longer work correctly. To do this, procedures must be developed to determine the accuracy of measurements. Several basic approaches are conceivable, the functionality of which should be examined in more detail in simulations. These include, in particular, test signal methods with which error correction can be implemented, as well as tracing the measured values back to physical reference systems using mathematical methods. Suitable methods should be tested in an experimental setup and compared with each other.

Imaging processes for defect detection in battery production

Project Description

In order to build up European battery production to be competitive, it is necessary to create unique selling points in terms of product quality. An important component could be the use of non-destructive imaging methods such as computer tomography (CT) directly in the line. With these procedures, a fully automatic 100% test of the batteries would be possible. In order to achieve this vision, it must first be guaranteed that exact quality statements can be made in a reproducible manner. The central challenge here is the compromise between sufficient scan quality and a specified cycle time. The aim of her work is to develop methods for data acquisition and analysis that make it possible to detect and evaluate defects with repeat accuracy. With regard to data acquisition, the critical influencing parameters during the measurement must be identified and their effects on the result reduced using automated approaches. The required data analysis can be achieved using machine learning (ML) approaches, which are trained using 3D models of defect-free and defective components. The research and validation of the corresponding methods is carried out in a practical manner in close collaboration with industrial partners.

Smart testing for the circular production of power electronics

Project Description

The goal of your work at the wbk Institute for Production Technology is to develop a smart test system that decides at an early stage whether a circuit board is reusable. For this purpose, optical, electrical and electrotechnical test methods should be used and integrated into a system. The prerequisite is a learning probability and cost model that enables the continuous optimization of the test process. Systems (e.g. flying probe testers, industrial robots, multicarriers, …) and measurement technology (camera, thermography, …) are provided for the handling and diagnosis of power electronics.

Adaptive production as an enabler of circular production

Project Description

In circular production, old products are industrially restored so that they can be put back into circulation as a functional product like new. A key challenge is the high variance of old products: While the housing of one old product could be rusted, another old product may have a component broken off. Industrial circular production must be able to handle this high variance automatically. The product can be restored with little effort through clever recombination and adaptive manufacturing of components. The aim of your work is to develop a solution for adaptive production to enable circular production. In the first step, defects such as shape deviations must be automatically recorded and analyzed and, based on this, a reprocessing strategy must be derived. The remanufacturing strategy can include, on the one hand, the adaptive production of spare parts and, on the other hand, the intelligent recombination of old components. The approach should be developed and tested using an industrial product. For this purpose, various example products are available at the institute, such as electric motors.

Digital twins of quality in production

Project Description

The digital twin is the new buzzword of Industry 4.0. With the help of the digital twin, it should be possible to make tomorrow’s production versatile. An important aspect of the digital twin in production is the recording, management and use of quality data from the production processes. The goal of your work is to develop a framework for the digital twin of quality data. On the one hand, this framework is intended to show how quality data from production processes can be connected and aggregated. This includes reviewing current technologies for quality data connection in production and the conception of an ontology for structuring quality data. On the other hand, it must be shown how the digital twin can be used to close quality control loops. This refers to how sensor data can be used to improve production processes. The tender is based on a major project with several partners from the automotive industry.

Function-oriented process optimization in additive manufacturing

Project Description

Additive manufacturing has an advantage over conventional manufacturing processes, especially for small quantities or complex component geometries. However, additive manufacturing processes have low process reproducibility, so defects such as pores or cracks occur in the workpiece. In order to address these quality deficiencies, two adjustment screws should be considered in an integrated manner: On the one hand, the process parameters can be optimized using process data, and on the other hand, adapting the component can also lead to success. The advertised position moves within this solution space.

Project Description

In your research you will deal with the validation and product development of modern tribological systems. Especially with regard to increased environmental requirements and the change in mobility, new requirements arise for emissions, power density and efficiency of modern sliding and friction systems. Circular factory for the perpetual innovative product

Project Description

The CRC 1574 “Circular factory for the perpetual innovative product” aims to enable integrated linear and circular production on an industrial scale. Its goal is to bring used products and components into new product generations, moving closer to the vision of a perpetual product. Innovative economic systems that decouple resource consumption from economic expansion are essential for achieving sustainable economic growth. The traditional linear economic approach of “take-make-use-dispose” is not a long-term solution, and circular production schemes provide an alternative. In addition to the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the Fraunhofer IOSB, Aalen University and the University of Stuttgart are also involved in the research project. Further information on the CRC is available on the website: https://www.sfb1574.kit.edu/.

Strategic management of global production networks

Project Description

In the last few decades, both large corporations and medium-sized companies have focused on the internationalization of value creation in their strategies. The result is globally distributed, highly interconnected production networks. Current events such as delivery bottlenecks and geopolitical tensions make companies question their strategy. In order to ensure competitive production in the long term, new approaches are required in the strategic management of global production networks that take this complexity and multidimensionality into account. The “Global Production Strategies” group therefore deals with the strategic orientation, targeted design and holistic management of global production.
