Dr. Rutkoski from University of Illinois is currently recruiting graduate students at the Masters or PhD level to join a research project aimed at enhancing the profitability of wheat farming in the Midwest. The main research area is Plant Breeding and quantitative genetics.

When wheat integrated into crop rotations, it produces benefits including enhanced pest management, improved soil health, and decreased nutrient loss. Wheat is predominantly cultivated in a double-crop system alongside soybeans in Illinois. The primary objective is to develop wheat varieties that optimize the profitability of this double-crop system, thereby benefiting growers economically and bolstering the long-term sustainability of agriculture in the region.

Stipend Amount

Currently, Masters students receive a monthly stipend of $2,453.33, while PhD students receive $2,649.60. Additionally, they will receive health insurance and a stipend.

Important Dates:

  • If you are selected for further consideration, you will receive an email by the end of July 2024 to arrange a Zoom interview.
  • Possible start dates are Spring, Summer, or Fall 2025.

Selection Criteria

Applicants with prior experience in field research programs or applied breeding programs will be preferred. In addition, proficiency in statistical programming and/or data analysis is good for selection process. The successful completion of a Masters degree is strongly preferred for those who are looking for PhD degree.
